The Great Outdoors Isn't Just Nature, It's a Necessity

At Stonebrook, children interact in and with nature almost every day. Our school sits on 3 acres of partly wooded land, with two natural play areas that give children authentic learning experiences they'll carry for the rest of their lives.

  • A working garden the children tend themselves
Nature in the Daily Lives of Children

Our forest is a classroom, literally

Young children are endlessly curious, unafraid, and open to the world, and nature is something they can experience directly. Their brains are wired to learn as they build knowledge through sensory and concrete experiences. At Stonebrook, we use the natural world to teach, because when experiences with nature are woven into daily routine, children benefit physically, emotionally, and intellectually.

What the research tells us

Science keeps confirming what we see every day: time in nature is one of the most powerful things for a young child's developing brain.

Sharper focus

Just 20 minutes outdoors has been shown to improve concentration in children, in some cases as much as medication.

Better coordination

Daily play in a natural area significantly increases balance and coordination in young children.

Early academic skills

Noticing differences between natural objects like seeds and burrs helps wire the brain for early math and pre-reading.

Lifelong stewardship

Connecting with nature early nurtures children into thoughtful, informed stewards of the earth's resources.
In a Parent's Words

"The highlight of our experience has been the playscape and Stonebrook Forest. Typically more reserved in the classroom, our son is actively involved here, uncovering worms below rocks, writing in the sand, and organizing imaginative play with his friends. He comfortably explores and learns here."

The Natural Playscape

Where imagination meets the outdoors

A natural playscape blends natural materials, features, and vegetation with creative landforms to build complex, high-value play spaces. It offers all the benefits of a traditional playground, gross motor activity, risk-taking, problem solving, and social interaction, but encourages the kind of play that matters most to children: pretending and building.

Unlike catalog playgrounds of steel and plastic, our playscape invites children to use their imaginations while experiencing the smells, textures, and wonders of the natural world. With few tall structures and no moving parts, it's also remarkably safe.

Stonebrook Forest

A deeper adventure for older children

For our pre-k children, Stonebrook Forest brings a richer, deeper outdoor experience of open-ended creative play and investigation, a place where nature can be perceived, observed, and touched. Birds, insects, plants, trees, soil, and water are all experienced firsthand under the canopy of towering pecan and oak trees.

"A three-and-a-half-year-old finds a stick, but in her mind it's not a stick. It's a wand. Then it becomes a drumstick, and a gnarled tree stump her drum. She taps away contentedly, the rhythm all her own."

Teacher Observation

Teachers see the difference quickly. "They learn observation skills after just a few visits," one shares. "Parents tell me, 'I can't believe what my child sees now.'" It's a one-of-a-kind outdoor classroom where imagination soars and real learning takes root.
